He Pou Tuārongo

The purpose of this report is to draw on the foundational setting as well as the practice, opportunity and barrier narratives detailed by whānau, to begin to provide insight into a hapū-defined approach to aquatic cultivation as a part of their blue economy.

This infographic report builds on the foundational context described in the He Pou Kai Āwha report, and the overview of the practice, barriers and opportunities for whānau hapū and iwi with regard to their aquatic cultivation practices outlined in the He Poutokomanawa report.

The report discusses the broad context that sits around a hapū economy described in Whakaika Te Moana (the Te Ao Tūroa framework components) and provide background for how we have positioned this work within a blue economy context. It also describes the findings of what aquatic cultivation looks like when viewed within a Māori world view, how it is placed to support what a hapū-defined blue economy could be, and how it differs from the current dominant perspective.

We acknowledge Rangiroa Rongonui, Gerrard Albert, Bubby Tamakehu, and Sid Tamakehu as the kaitiaki of this kōrero tuku iho in this report. The infographics and the mātauranga within them must not be used out of the context as presented in the project. Their use should always adhere to the original intent and narrative of the Whakaika Te Moana project.
