Empowering kaitiaki

Webinar presentation by Regan Fairlie and Reon Tuanau, Sept 2019 (32 min + Q&A)

Marine ecology, spatial planning, real-time monitoring, and aquaculture all produce data that can support kaitiaki in their work. However, finding out about and accessing these troves of science information is not always straightforward – and the format is not always readily understandable or useable.

Regan Fairlie, a researcher from the Tāhuhu Matatau Te Ao Tangaroa project, and Reon Tuanau, a kaitiaki and Environmental Resource Manager for Ngāi Te Rangi, discussed an online pātaka korero (digital resource), that was co-developed with hapū and kaitiaki of the Tauranga Moana.

This tailors and develops information into forms that best suit frontline kaitiaki.

The online tool is being used by kaitiaki and Māori communities to support their educational, research, future co-management/co-governance, and planning activities in the domain of Tangaroa.
