Need for EBFM highlighted at Parliament

A need for an ecosystem-based approach to managing fishing was highlighted by Dr Chris Cornelisen at Parliament last month.

Chris, a member of our Leadership Team and the chief science capability officer at Cawthron Institute, spoke at the Royal Society Te Apārangi Speaker’s Science Forum, Science for Sustainable Fisheries.

His talk, titled Science and technology for sustainable fisheries and a healthy ocean, covered two of the seven themes from the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor’s report on the future of commercial fishing in Aotearoa New Zealand, including the need for an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management (EBFM).

Sustainable Seas is working with Māori partners and stakeholders in Hawke’s Bay, Hauraki Gulf, Malborough Sounds and across Aotearoa to create and trial a raft of tools and resources that will help inform fisheries management in the context of multiple stressors.
