Virtual Lab: Ecosystem-based management in Aotearoa New Zealand

This event is part of the First International Ocean Decade Conference, an international event that's being run by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

Co-creation of knowledge is important for meaningful change and science alone is not enough. We illustrate a line-of-sight towards a healthy and resilient ocean via ecosystem-based management, drawing on lessons from the Sustainable Seas Challenge.

This student-led discussion is a satellite event to the Ocean Decade Laboratory - A Healthy & Resilient Ocean.

It will share our multi-stakeholder approach from the perspective of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Sustainable Seas Challenge is an example of an active, co-developed, multi-year project which focuses on ecosystem-based management by, with, and for all acting stakeholders, including natural and social scientists, economists, experts in mātauranga Māori, law and policy.

This two-hour event will include high-level presentations and interviews with leading practitioners from the Challenge (University of Waikato, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, and NIWA), and finish in an open panel discussion.

The aim is to challenge our current way of thinking, generating a unique perspective on science in the local context, and discuss how we can work to achieve an increased understanding and sustainable management of our valuable marine environment.

The time for this event is 2pm NZDT, which is 2am CET.
