In February 2022, the Enabling kaitiakitanga and EBM project hosted an online workshop with and for four key Aotearoa New Zealand government agencies: Department of Conservation, Ministry for the Environment, Environment Protection Authority, Ministry for Primary Industries and Fisheries New Zealand.

The project has partnered with target audiences from across the whole system, drawing on the Three Spheres of Influence framework, presented in the Report of Matike Mai Aotearoa – The Independent Working Group on Constitutional Transformation (2016).

We are working with research partners to understand key barriers, identify potential opportunities, and co-develop tools that will better enable holistic care and use of our moana (ie Kaitiakitanga and EBM); contributing to the enhancement of the mauri and mana of our environment and ourselves.

The workshop was an opportunity for key agencies to consider a methodology for systems-focused action-planning, called Future Search. It was an invitation to think about different ways of engaging on complex issues. It was also the sharing of an internationally acknowledged, provenly effective tool for collaboration which those agencies and the Oceans Secretariat can now potentially apply themselves.
