Using drones to monitor marine ecosystems

Webinar presentation by Leigh Tait, June 2019 (40 min + Q&A)

Leigh Tait (NIWA) described his research on monitoring kelp and seaweed biodiversity of coastal marine ecosystems with drones. Drones have great potential for monitoring habitats that are difficult to reach or cover large areas.

Leigh assessed whether standard (RGB) and specialised cameras (multispectral) can accurately distinguish natural coastal habitats and will discuss the efficiency and limitations of this technology. He mapped the impact of post-earthquake lifting of the Kaikōura coastline on kelp and other seaweed species.

This research can inform coastal management by identifying areas which need protection to help kelp forests recover.

This webinar will be of interest to people working in marine management, monitoring, conservation or related science fields.
