PhD scholarships available in marine ecosystem science

The Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge has three PhD scholarships on offer to candidates with a passion for marine ecosystem science.

This is an excellent opportunity for interested students to be a part of an exciting, large multi-institutional and trans-disciplinary programme involving researchers from throughout the country. The selected candidates will be supervised and mentored by leading scientists from the universities of Waikato, Canterbury and Auckland as well as the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

Scholarships on offer

The specifics of each PhD project will be developed in conjunction with the successful candidate to best match interests and capabilities but will be in the following broad areas:

• Valuable Seas - Quantifying the delivery of coastal ecosystems services (Scholarship 1)
• Dynamic Seas – Resilience and tipping points in coastal ecosystems (Scholarships 2a & 2b).

Who can apply?

The successful candidates must have an MSc or BSc(Hons) (or equivalent qualification), ideally in marine ecology/oceanography or a related discipline. However, background is less important than a strong interest in ecology, ecosystem science and good quantitative/modelling skills.
