David Schiel awarded UC Research Medal

Distinguished Professor David Schiel has been awarded the University of Canterbury’s Research Medal.


Prof Schiel is widely acknowledged as one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent marine scientists. In 26 years at UC, he has worked on a wide range of topics in marine science, with internationally recognised contributions in aquaculture, fisheries, kelp forest ecology and the functioning of nearshore ecosystems.

Prof Schiel is the Science Programme Leader for Dynamic Seas. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.

UC Research Medal

The Research Medal is awarded for excellence demonstrated by a sustained record of research of the highest quality, or by research of outstanding merit produced over a more limited timeframe.
